ARTIST STATEMENT

"With the medium of oil paint, I'm endeavouring to bring to life a beautiful moment of discovery and wandering. These walks are embraced by the twists and deep hovering forms that wait on the coastal fringe.

Thoughts come and go, ideas emerge then dissolve. Moons rise and suns set.

Breaks of light appear and embrace the shadowing forms of Moonahs and open a new space for a memory to appear. Beach tracks and breakwaters.

There is a pulse in the landscape that is forever changing. I react to those moments and allow my interpretation to arrive in its own time. The subtleties of Port Phillip Bay to the South Western District of Victoria, I traverse between two bays. The Southern Ocean, the inner volcanic regions provide me with so much inspiration and range that I don’t think my passion for painting will never end." 

BIO  

Graeme Altmann has earned widespread recognition for his evocative and expansive landscapes. He completed a Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts) in 1989, majoring in painting, before pursuing a Postgraduate Degree in Painting at Monash University under the mentorship of Phillip Hunter. During this time, he was noticed by Sydney gallery director Chandler Coventry, leading to his debut solo exhibition at Coventry Gallery. He has since held numerous solo exhibitions in both Sydney and Melbourne.

In 1995, Altmann was honoured with a major solo exhibition at Warrnambool Art Gallery, a tribute to his birthplace and a key source of inspiration in his work. His accolades include winning the Mission Seafarers Art Prize (2005) and being a finalist in several prestigious awards, including the ANL Art Prize, Lorne Sculpture Biennale (twice), Montalto Art Prize (twice), Bayside Art Prize, and the Paddington Art Prize.

Currently living in Melbourne and continuing to exhibit on a regular basis.
