Beth Gibbeson, 'Eliminate Illuminate Elucidate'
'There is a time in life when you just take a walk: And you walk in your own landscape.' — William de Kooning
"As I paint, this phrase resonates with me, absorbing myself in the process of revealing the powerful and physical force of the Australian landscape, shaped by memory and my immediate experience.
By eliminating and abstracting the realistic details of the landscape, I seek to elucidate a vision that goes beyond literal representation, expressing the interplay of abstract shapes, lines, and colours, distilling the landscape that reflects my experience and perception.
I paint using vibrant, bold colours that captures the beauty of what I see and feel. By blending the paint to highlight tonal contrasts, particularly the light within each shape, I bring the forms beyond flat two-dimensionality, imbuing them with an illuminative quality. Angled lines extend and fold within themselves, guiding the eye beyond the frame and adding a sense of movement. Working with a rhythmic, intuitive flow, I layer depth and luminosity, allowing the colours to have a life of their own.
My paintings are an exploration of my inspiration from the Australian landscape. I am absorbed in the process of revealing its powerful physical force, aiming to capture the brilliant, electric colours that emerge from my experience."
