ARTIST STATEMENT 

Sediment Stories is an exhibition of ceramic sculptures that brings together wheel-thrown clay forms and bricks collected from a local beach on Dharawal Country. Over the past decade, Chrystie has gathered these tumbled bricks, carried to the shoreline by creeks from a long-closed brickworks. Once part of the expansion of the suburbs, these industrial remnants have been worn smooth by waves and time, their rigid forms softened and reshaped by the ocean.

Through these resonant materials, Sediment Stories reflects on the histories embedded in clay with its extraction, transformation, and role in shaping the built environment. Grounded in a specific coastal landscape, the exhibition considers broader questions of land use, settlement, and environmental change. It suggests a longer ecological horizon, where nature ultimately reclaims the traces of our habitation, reshaping the suburbs until they once again belong to the landscape.

Chrystie Longworth is an artist based on Dharawal Country.
 

Her sculptural and functional ceramics have been shown in various galleries and design stores across Australia. Originally trained in Printmaking at Sydney College of the Arts, in 2024 Chrystie completed a Master of Fine Art (Ceramics) at the National Art School.
 

Chrystie has recently been a finalist in the North Queensland Ceramic Awards and the Northern Beaches Environmental Art Prize. She is the recipient of the N.E. Pethebridge Ceramic Award and also received an Honourable Mention in Hornsby Council’s Reimagine Art Prize.
