Colleen Guiney, And The Trees Talked
"The series, And The Trees Talked began with an urge to seek out tranquil pockets of native trees in regional Victoria. All my spare time was spent basking under the canopies and standing in awe of the magnificence of their height and grounding influence. My work takes direct inspiration from their generous shade, strong trunks and spindly branches. I observed insects and other creatures making their mark on the trunks and branches, weaving their own story and making it part of the tree’s powerful presence on our earth. Time spent with trees and in nature is an essential part of my process.
Back in the studio the paintings begin with a feeling and quiet contemplation of my visit with the trees to invite connection. My process starts with experimenting with colours and as my palette evolves, the shapes and structure of the pieces come forward. In the process of making this work I become passionate about the exact shade of dusty pink and grey-blue, and I find it more and more pleasurable to see the works coming together when the colours are just right. I don’t stop until each piece reflects the visual and emotional experience of my nature visits. I paint trees because I couldn’t live without them and this is my way of honouring them for giving us so much life and beauty."
