David Turner, More Serious Business
Turner’s love of all things geometric continues with this series of paintings being shown at Boom Gallery.
Turner has always been interested in the underlying structures of man made forms. In ‘More Serious Business’ the paintings are based on the intricate Islamic designs and constructions as found in the Alhambra, Granada, Spain. Here you will find that cubes, rectangles, triangles and hexagons are the underlying geometric structures to what they created. These structures can also be found in other cultures around the world as seen in North American Zuni and Navaho art in the intricate tapestries and basket designs they created. They can be further observed in South America with Aztec and Mayan cultures. Turner is fascinated by these abstract geometric images which often predate figurative European Art. It is not until Kazimir Malevich and Piet Mondrian that we rediscover geometric abstract forms that rely on the visual language for their potency.
Turner takes these basic geometric forms, isolates them in a grid and then repeats them continually and by so doing creates a dynamic pattern of movement with the further use of colour and optical effects that lead the eye on a dance through the works.
These acrylic paintings on canvas are all patiently constructed and have become a labour of love that are meant to be enjoyed.
