Isobel Rayson, 'For As Long As It Lasts'
"For as long as it lasts explores the intrinsic need to search for order and structure to navigate the complexities of contemporary existence and accommodate a growing sense of uncertainty about the future. Through the use of predetermined structures, repetitive patterns, and grid-like compositions, I organise and arrange visual elements within the works and in turn, achieve a semblance of control.
Each work consists of fine, repetitive lines, hand-carved through layers of paint, revealing the natural wooden surface underneath. These marks contrast against the monochromatic painted backgrounds, creating pattern, texture, and rhythm. The unforgiving nature of the carving gouge requires me to approach the surface with discipline and intention, resulting in a quiet, focused environment, further complementing the concept behind this series of new works."
