We are thrilled to welcome Kazland back to Boom for his solo exhibition Protection Racket - a playful and dynamic body of new work. It is a collection of very small 2D and 3D works that demonstrates the breadth of Kazland's supercharged art practice.

Kazland has a growing International audience and we look forward to raising awareness of his work here in Australia. Protection Racket is a superb follow-up show to his successful first 2025 exhibition at Boom, Ethereal Fly Tipping.


ARTIST STATEMENT
 

"After years of hoarding old paintings, pieces of work benches, sections of gallery walls, and fragments of my old studios, I’ve amassed a collection (dangerous pile) of special plywood that’s been traveling with me for years. 
 

They’ve all finally found a use as the basis for the new direction for my work as shrines and other protective objects and figures. 
 

These shrines and such are made to protect the spaces they are in. Each one casting a spell up into the air around it. 
 

Things are feeling bad out there at the moment so I’ve been making more and more things to make me feel okay. 
 

I hope they can make you feel less bad too."


BIO

Kazland, born Callum J. Buckland (Frimley, UK, 1990) is a self taught, mixed media artist from the south of England. A process based artist, rarely working with a plan, he starts each piece letting the work guide itself until an idea starts to form, and then pursuing it until it's end (or a better idea takes over). Drawing inspiration from folk tales and the movies of his childhood he reshapes and retells these stories in each piece to create things to help cope with the here and now.
