Kir Larwill, 'Kin'
Kir Larwill is a passionate artist and gallerist living and working in central Victoria.
Kir has been making artwork for decades and has built an incredible arts practice over this time. We are drawn to the simple compositions, rich surfaces and evocativeness of her paintings. We affirm her philosophy of finding the beauty and meaning in everyday moments.
Kin is Kir's second solo exhibition at Boom and we are excited to hang 24 new still life works in our orange gallery space this month.
ARTIST STATEMENT
"Every time I use that cup, take it so deliberately from that cupboard, I am filled with memories of my aunt. All the coffees shared on her verandah.
Things connect us. We remember through them, anchor ourselves with them, imbue them with meaning beyond their function. Each little object painting is both a meditation and a gesture of empathy, a portrait of something unassuming and beautiful. Something I am quietly moved by.
I paint on repurposed boards, discarded prints or paintings salvaged from op shops. This is an environmental choice, but it’s also an aesthetic one. I am drawn to the marks, dings, scratches and imagery that’s there before I come along. Their own histories as treasured objects. The choice not to frame is also deliberate, to draw attention to battered edges and hidden layers, each little painting a fragment of a whole."
BIO
I work in my home-based studio in Castlemaine, on Djaara Country. My practice includes painting, drawing and printmaking. I’ve been exhibiting for over 20 years, after changing direction in my late 30s via a Visual Arts Diploma.
The work I make is grounded in the beauty and meaning found in the everyday. I am interested in the process of painting, the power of colour and the weight of shadows. I love the absorption of making work, those transporting studio moments where a painting surprises you. Equally, I love the interplay of representation and abstraction and the possibilities that lie across or in between both.
