Liam Ross Baker returns to Boom with Wings, his second solo exhibition with the gallery.

Liam is an exciting, emerging Tasmanian artist who has recently moved to Melbourne. His practice is accelerating and opportunities have opened up for him in both Victoria and NSW. His work is bold, yet thoughtful and reflective. Much like the artist, each work tells a quiet tale with a sharp intelligence and wit, counterbalanced with humility. 

ARTIST STATEMENT

“Upon a recent move from southern Tasmania and landing my feet in Melbourne, I was quite bewildered. No seascapes, nothing I knew surrounded me, so by the nature of my practice it seemed to revert to the thing that was most present in both Tasmania and Victoria, self.

The hands came as a result of some heavy self reflection. The hands can act intimately, violently, creatively etc.

The human condition stands as major influence on my practice, and with this body of work it was no different. Grief, change, humour and more came in troves here in Melbourne; I was trying to find my feet and so too my hands.

Day after day I would photograph my hands and paint them as they were that day, they became a form of record keeping; a diary of life lived in these first few months of life here. I’ve found that narrative comes amply through the natural process of documentation and heavy observation, so as the body of work came to fruition the narrative came clearer. The human experience can be overwhelming yet fulfilling, change infers a level of what I think this work is, investigation, learning and most of all life observed honestly.”

BIO

Liam Ross Baker is an artist born in southern Lutruwita/Tasmania in 1998.

Baker’s paintings are predominantly made using oil on canvas and board exploring figuration and narrative. Baker grew up in southern Tasmania in the small fishing town of Dover where he was surrounded by the beautiful natural scenery and landscapes, yet he took a shine for the endless tales and stories of lives lived in and around the town, and the industries that accompanied the local area. Through this love for the human experience, he found an intense interest in his direct life and surroundings, using his own experience to unpack and question culture, industry and people through narrative, symbology and most importantly figuration.

Baker’s practice is inherently informed and influenced by his direct surroundings. He is currently exploring imagery and symbology drawn from his own body as direct observational storytelling. Focusing in on a single hand or pulling back on a full form, he is taking his subject matter all the way back to its literal roots to further break down what it is to be human, to explore what is at the forefront/recesses of his daily life, thought and lived experience.

After finishing his Bachelor of Fine Art Degree in Hobart, Tasmania he began to work on his practice, Baker’s work began emerging to the public in Hobart through art prizes and group shows, his first considerable showing was in a joint show as a part of Despard Galleries emerging artist show Young Bloods in 2023, his first solo exhibition with Boom Gallery entitled The Bread, The Bird & The Baker in September of 2025 and now his second solo Wings in July of 2026.
