Stacey McCall, 'A Way Of Painting'
Stacey McCall lives and works in Kensington, Melbourne. The suburb is very dear to her and she has a large network of friends and other creatives creating a great sense of place and meaning for her. She has a dedicated practice that focuses on the joys of the everyday and domesticity. A focus on the beauty of familiar cups, plates, vases, fabrics, wall finishes, fruit and flowers. All of the beautiful but simple things that make each day pleasurable to her. Her tenderness, love and connection to these objects and interiors has resonated with our audience. Her recent exhibitions have sold out with many keen art buyers waiting for new work to arrive at the gallery.
We love working with Stacey as she is as warm, friendly and lovely as her paintings. In many ways Stacey and her manners are in perfect harmony with the artworks she produces.
ARTIST STATEMENT
"My work always begins in a sketchbook, loose washy drawings in pencil, watercolour and gouache, objects defined by shape and shadows, context suggested by light coming through a window, the angle of a table, a pattern on a wall. Thin layers of oil paint mimic those initial water colour washes, pencil marks showing though translucent layers, the texture of the wooden boards I paint on exposed, my paintings informed by my drawings and less about reality, pushing the boundaries of abstraction.
My subject matter continues to be the things around me, the ordinary of everyday, those familiar things of our shared experience, the narrative of the domestic, the painting as object, texture and brush mark defining a way of painting."

After completing Fine art at RMIT, with a major in Gold and Silversmithing, Stacey worked as a bespoke jeweller for 15 years but eventually turned back to her true passion… painting. She now works full time from her garden studio in the inner Melbourne suburb of Kensington.
