Dawn Vachon studied visual arts at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, receiving her BFA in 2008. Since relocating to Melbourne, she has made a lot of ceramic pots and has exhibited a handful of ceramic things that aren’t pots. Notably she was included with a group of outsiders showing as part of The Australian Ceramics Association’s recent Biennial Exhibition. Furthermore her piece Beard and Tie was acquired by the Gold Coast City Gallery as part of their 2016 international ceramic art award. Dawn continues to work from her studio in Coburg, gently nudging at the potential of ceramic materials. This range of ceramic wares is essentially about combining function (holding/delivering/presenting food, beverage, flowers) with surfaces to present glaze. Although a competent thrower, I often choose to pinch forms in order to give the glaze a more organically textured terrain to flow over. And by layering multiple glazes, there is always some level of surprise when opening the kiln. The Melbourne Ceramics Market exhibition continues at Boom until December 24th.
