It is not often that a Year 11 student is offered a solo exhibition in a commercial gallery but Harry McEvoy deserves this opportunity. He has really impressed us by his persistent desire to paint, draw and make, often on found objects and waste materials. His artwork is a celebration of youthful energy and boldness but also thoughtfulness and reflection …. “I’m a 17-year-old skateboarder from Geelong. In my artwork I express experiences, both good and bad I am faced with as a teenager growing up on the Surf Coast. I have been properly been painting for around two years, but I always loved art classes in primary school. My art is also strongly based on my emotions. My skateboarding strongly influences my artwork, as they are both similar in the sense that there are no boundaries or a coach yelling in your ear. I use a variety of materials such as acrylic paint, vipond’s, oil paint, spray paint, charcoal, oil pastels and anything new I can get my hands on. Most of the time I will paint with my hands, I feel like it is a lot easier but in saying that I also do use brushes and spatulas. Some of my main influences are Jean-Michel Basquiat, Picasso and Ben Quilty.
