    ARTIST STATEMENT

'Garden' and 'A Life In The Woods' continue an ongoing series of works in which intuitive responses are confined by a set of self-imposed obstructions. While the vehicle for working is documenting life, the compositions themselves are an exploration into collaging materials, styles, and techniques. Subtly combining aspects of painting and sculpture, these new works pull together elements such as a child's toy deer rendered in an illustrative style, the colour palette of a garden, construction materials, and house paint.

    BIO

Michael McCafferty’s painting practice is a form of extended diary keeping in which he reinterprets his life and memories both true and false, idealised and misremembered. His artworks map private, interior and architectural spaces, as well as the family, friends and events that haunt them.

Working from a foundation in drawing, Michael collages a range of materials and techniques together to translate source material. These new versions combine elements of sculpture, drawings, paintings, and print, but are unified by his formalist handling of colour, materials and scale.
