ARTIST STATEMENT
"This series began as an exploration of colour studies, still life and a life long obsession with kitchenalia. It was an attempt to distill the visual language of my commercial practice into its most essential elements. By removing brands, text and distracting surface textures, I challenged myself to work purely with graphic shapes, embracing strong contrasts and intense colours to drive each composition. Each artwork was sparked by a single nostalgic object, a familiar item that became the catalyst for a small visual narrative. These objects informed the additional props that were added to the still life compositions, creating graphic, abstracted vignettes that are a reminder of the simple, quiet rituals of mealtimes.
The custom framing for this series is an extension of the artworks, further enhancing the graphic feel of each piece."
BIO
Carli Wilson is a Geelong-based professional photographer who has worked commercially since graduating from RMIT University in 1998. From her Newtown studio in Victoria, she has created imagery for a broad range of arts, cultural, and commercial clients, including the National Gallery of Australia, Geelong Gallery, Ballarat Craft, the Ballarat Foto Biennale, the National Wool Museum, and numerous food and beverage brands. For more than five years Carli has also photographed artworks, exhibition installations and products for Boom Gallery, developing a deep appreciation for art gallery processes and how to capture the story behind an exhibition curation along with visually translating the huge variety of materials used by artists.
Carli’s freelance and artistic practice centres on concept development and the meticulous construction of scenes within the studio. She builds sets and visual narratives that explore ideas about the subject, often guided by props that she has collected and curated. Carli is particularly drawn to objects that carry a sense of nostalgia—items that evoke memory, or quiet familiarity—and she uses them to inform her ideas and add an emotional layer to her work.
Alongside her photographic practice, Carli is a trained secondary VCE teacher and a certified trainer and assessor (Cert IV). These roles have enabled her to share her skills within the arts community, fostering creativity and technical understanding in others while continuing to evolve her own practice.
