ARTIST STATEMENT
Referencing the juggle between the freedom of movement within ourselves and the world, and the rigid barriers we often impose, Sarah Kelk uses colour as a central tool to navigate the emotional terrain of her work. Her layered palettes echo the landscapes we traverse — both internal and external —blurring the lines between memory, place and possibility. The grounded feeling of ‘place’ is a reoccurring theme in Kelk’s work, yet it is colour that gives form to fleeting impressions, transforming remembered or imagined environments into hazy, effervescent compositions alive with movement and emotion.
BIO
Sarah Kelk is a Naarm (Melbourne) based contemporary painter known for her bold and emotive works that explore themes of nature, identity, and personal narrative. Her practice examines processes and influences simultaneously and harmoniously, connecting abstraction with figuration in a new narrative that evokes emotional depth and movement. Energised blocks of colour are central to her work, and although traces of structure appear, references to nature, architecture, personal memories, historical references and everyday life are visible in a less ordered energy.
