ARTIST STATEMENT

"This mini-series is inspired by the ornate patterns of Portuguese tiles and the way their shapes seem to morph and pulse. I enjoy playing with flat compositions that are able to tessellate and move."

BIO

Nikolaus Dolman is an Australian artist based in Geelong, Victoria. Born in 1987, he holds a Bachelor of Fine Art specialising in Printmaking from Southern Cross University, Lismore NSW and a Master’s in Art Administration from the University of New South Wales Art & Design, Sydney.

His multidisciplinary practice spans painting, printmaking, sculpture, and collage, with a focus on the transient nature of consumer culture, exploring themes of advertising, representation, repetition and production. Through voyeuristic elements like windows and doors, Dolman constructs dystopian formalism, defined by bold colour contrasts, melting forms, and tactile intensity.

Dolman has presented solo exhibitions including Monolithic Hairwig / Tinfoil Helmet (2021) at Fivewalls, Melbourne; Cardboard Paintings (2019) at Stacks Projects during the Sydney Contemporary Art Fair; and 1 Hour Tooth Whitening (2018) at DeliGrocery Project in New York City. His work has also been featured in group exhibitions such as Escapade and Best Life (2022-2023) at Saint Cloche, Sydney; Snow Globe (2020) at LON Gallery, Melbourne; and Compound (2018) at Chalk Horse, Sydney.

He has been a finalist in awards including the Bayside Art Prize (2022) and The 55th Fisher’s Ghost Award (2017) and completed residencies in New York. His work is included in the Contemporary Collage Museum in Viborg, Denmark, as well as in private collections throughout Europe and America.
