Sophia Legoe is a local ceramic artist who works from her home studio, which abuts the mangrove system on the edge of the river in Barwon Heads. As a lifelong keen “edge of the reef” swimmer, Sophia’s works are inspired by the magical worlds that exist in rockpools and around reefs, manifesting in sculptural vessels that revel in glaze chemistry and its beautiful possibilities. All her works are hand-pinched using fingers and hands as the main making tools, with a desire to express and push the natural malleability of the clay. A lover of colour, she takes cues from the natural world and marine environments. Her ceramic pieces are a collaboration between the plasticity of clay, glaze experimentation and her own unique making process, with an intention to be evocative of sensory experiences. Sophia has a Bachelor and an Honours Degree in Fine Art from The University of Melbourne, VCA. She was a recent finalist in this year’s Klytie Pate award, and her work is held in many private collections both in Australia and overseas.
