Black + White Plate

By Catherine Ward

stoneware, underglaze, glaze sgraffito technique

size approx 20cm diameter

Each vessel is created to be a sculptural stand-alone piece, though are suitable for flowers, foliage or food if desired.

All pieces are fired to 1280 degrees in an electric kiln in Catherine’s studio.

Catherine Ward creates hand built, stoneware ceramics in her studio in Newtown with her work exploring positive and negative space, line and pattern. She enjoys blurring the boundary in the decorative aspect of her pieces between abstraction and realism.

Pieces are built using coiling, pinching or slab construction and then decorated using sgraffito, hand painted detail in underglaze, or by using underglaze transfers. The sgraffito technique is used to remove background colour in part, revealing a pattern, but also creating subsequent unique shapes.
