ARTIST STATEMENT

"‘Bread with Vase’ and ‘American Diner’ are both derived from the unextraordinary moment. Their objective titles redirect the prevailing standard of the often immediately available poetic evaluation of artworks. Instead, it’s weight is ought to be found in undergoing the particular and subjective connection beyond the images general meaning. I find these moments through photographs I’ve taken. Searching for an often-obscured frame where an unintended detail or gesture lays, petitioning to be desired. A desire such as this continues through to handmaking the custom frames in which my works are made. Finding a dimension that honours the details and letting those limits obscure the world outside of the image."

BIO

Ruby Archer (b.2003) is an emerging artist deeply engaged in their studio practice. They are currently pursuing their BFA at RMIT University. With a determined focus in their practice, Ruby is an artist dedicated to capturing the contradictory nature of the sublime, particularly when it emerges from the unremarkable and quotidian.

Archer’s practice is critically informed by their foundational work in photography. This interplay between disciplines is driven by a desire to explore the difference between the true moment and its image. Her photographic process is of precise observation; seeking to capture the intimate, quiet tensions of everyday life.

Ruby’s work hinges on the search for a small detail that "pricks" or deeply affects the viewer. For Archer, this is the unsuspecting element that makes a familiar scene feel suddenly uncertain or profound. It is this powerful tension between the known and the mysterious that she translates from her photographs into her paintings.
