ARTIST STATEMENT

"This series of oil portraits emerged in the space between observation and intuition. While figurative, I am less concerned with capturing the likeness of specific individuals than with creating atmosphere—portraiture as both reflection of, and invitation into, felt states of intimacy and mystery. My process is responsive rather than fixed. Using brushes, rollers, sandpaper, and my fingers, each layer and mark informs the next.

Without a predetermined destination, I allow the work to unfold through a process of looking, listening, and responding until form, character, and mood gradually reveal themselves."

BIO

Lucy Hardie is a Torquay based artist whose practice spans intricately detailed ink drawing, evocative oil painting, and poetry. Her work explores transformation, intimacy, and psychological interiority, creating works that are at once atmospheric, tender, and quietly otherworldly. She is interested in evoking what can be deeply felt yet not easily named—a sense of mystery and presence that invites the viewer into direct experience rather than explanation. Hardie has exhibited in Australia and internationally, including in Europe and the United States, and her work is held in public and private collections worldwide.
