ARTIST STATEMENT

“Immigrating to another country is a shared experience by many in Australia. Where a family of four sought a better future for their kids. At 10 my family moved to Melbourne to make it our new home. Yet, assimilation to a new environment and a whole different culture was a crucial step in, making friends, studying at school or even getting your first job. Assimilation to a point where your roots go to sleep. Where your past quietens to a slumber. In the recent years I’ve come to re-awaken my cultural roots as a Filipino migrant. Inspired by those who are creating their own seat at the table, I seek to paint and build on the canvas that others have started creating.”

John reconnects with his Filipino roots through the Bolo sword, a symbol of resistance throughout Filipino history, and Capiz shells, a local Filipino material known for its translucency used in heritage architecture as windowpanes. John fuses contemporary design and art as a way for him to create his own narrations of these materials and symbols.
