ARTIST STATEMENT
"These works were as simple as an observation turned investigation into symbology. The glove carries many narratives depending on its use, and in this case a single use. The kind of glove made dictates what kind of work it will do, and that seems to have some cross over. The glove also acts as a barrier, a device to separate your hands from what you will come to touch, disconnect."
BIO
Liam Ross Baker is an artist born in southern Lutruwita/Tasmania in 1998.
Baker's paintings are predominantly made using oils on canvas and board exploring figuration and narrative. Baker grew up in southern Tasmania in the small fishing town of Dover where he was surrounded by the beautiful natural scenery and landscapes, yet he took a shine for the endless tales and stories of lives lived in and around the town, and the industries that accompanied the local area. Through this love for the human experience, he found an intense interest in his direct life and surroundings, using his own experience to unpack and question culture, industry and people through narrative, symbology and most importantly figuration.
Baker's practice is inherently informed and influenced by his direct surroundings. He is currently exploring imagery and symbology drawn from his own body as direct observational storytelling. Focusing in on a single hand or pulling back on a full form, he is taking his subject matter all the way back to its literal roots to further break down what it is to be human, to explore what is at the forefront/recesses of his daily life, thought and lived experience.
After finishing his Bachelor of Fine Art Degree in Hobart, Tasmania he began to work on his practice, Baker's work began emerging to the public in Hobart through art prizes and group shows, his first considerable showing was in a joint show as a part of Despard Galleries emerging artist show 'Young Bloods' in 2023, his first solo exhibition with Boom Gallery entitled 'The Bread, The Bird & The Baker' in September of 2025 and now his second solo 'Wings' in July of 2026.
