Shadow Memory

ARTIST STATEMENT

"My paintings are an ode to the subconscious marks left on our memory. I approach my work by allowing the piece to reveal itself, encouraging watered down washes of paint to stain and leave impressions. This process of discovering an impression rather than labouring for one has become a self taught lesson in restraint. As layers are added scenes from my memory are revealed, blurring the lines between what is real and what is imagined."

BIO

Ash Leslie is an abstract artist based on the coast South of Sydney. A self taught painter, Ash worked in graphic design roles for over a decade when a transition into motherhood 6 years ago acted as a catalyst to pursuing her life long passion for a career in visual arts. Since then Ash’s work has been featured in a range of group exhibitions around Victoria and New South Wales, including exhibiting as a finalist in The Paddington Art Prize in 2022 where she was the recipient The Nock Art Residency, and a finalist in several prizes during in 2023 and 2024. Ash has had two solo shows at Saint Cloche in Paddington in 2023 and 2024, and most recently a solo exhibition with The Design Files in Collingwood, Melbourne May 2024.
