"These works were inspired by the beginning of spring, new blossoms, particularly fruit trees. I decided to make two outdoor still life paintings, because I was working on a lot of landscape painting at the same time. I like overcast light because it’s soft and can feel quiet, it also lets you see nice subtlety in form and colour, as opposed to the harsh light and shadow of direct sunlight, which also has its place. I spent quite a while arranging and playing with the layout of the objects on the table, which was an enjoyable part of the process. For me, these paintings are about mood, but also have the feeling of an underlying narrative."
