This body of work is about the solitude of the coastal landscape on a winter’s day. Inspired predominantly by the environment around Port Fairy, where Lara spends time each year, she aims to capture fragments of the landscape, such as the forms of rocks, the texture of grass or the lines of rain falling down. These are re-imagined and layered through processes including relief printing, transparent layers of paint and scratching into the surface of the board using an etching needle. The mark of the human hand is intentionally visible as a way of connecting to the tactility of the landscape. Lara aims to create images that suggest depth but remain flat, depicting a place that is magical and moody, harsh but peaceful.
