ARTIST STATEMENT
My recent paintings continue an intuitive exploration of colour and light, moving away from the structured geometry of earlier work toward something looser and more fluid. Each begins with a field of colour over which a wandering line drifts—an instinctive gesture tracing the energy of my surroundings. Bright, almost neon hues reflect the intensity of my environment: its visual noise and the interruptions and frictions that gather through daily life.
Beneath the smooth surface, buried layers record a process of covering and renewal. Creating these works allows me to redirect unrest and grief into movement and colour, discovering a quieter rhythm within the chaos. I want the viewer to experience that same drenching of colour—a brief stillness within the saturation.
BIO
Ellie Malin is a Melbourne-based artist working in painting and printmaking. Her bold, chromatic compositions explore memory, place, and emotional resonance through layered colour fields. Working intuitively, she builds surfaces that reveal and conceal, merging architectural forms with organic patterns in a process she likens to “cellular memory.” Ellie holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Printmaking) from Monash University and has exhibited widely, including at Heide Museum of Modern Art, Linden Gallery, Australian Print Workshop, and Megalo Gallery. She has been a finalist in awards including the 2025 Experimental Print Prize at Castlemaine Art Gallery, the Senini Award at McClelland Gallery and Swan Hill Print and Drawing Award, with works held in national and international collections.
