By Shelley McKenzie
Bruce Pascoe in his book Dark Emu describes how one of John Batman's men Andrew Todd sketched the Wadda wurrung women cultivating huge tracts of land with yam daisy or murnong. These little sweet potatoes send up yellow flowers.
The You Yangs are now seasonally flanked by tracts of yellow flowers-now canola.
The paintings reflect on the omnipresence of the You Yangs, the persistence of yellow in the landscape but the great difference in land management practice between the two approaches.
