ARTIST STATEMENT
Hastily and intuitively oil pastel is put to surface to give shape to moments of beauty experienced by the artist. Whether found by happenstance or composed by the artists hand these moments have been chosen simply because Stone draws what she wishes to keep. An orchid seen on a sill, quiet but breathtaking, the stardust patterned shell of a female swimmer crab, or a hand painted bottle found at a thrift store brought home to be treasured, are all subjects in this series, bound together simply by the quickening of the artist’s heart as she sees and experiences them.

Phoebe Stone is a self-taught, Sydney based artist working predominantly in oil pastels to explore the beauty and delight to be found in a well balanced coming together of composition, colour, pattern and texture.
Scenes of the domestic, whether food or the accoutrement of daily life, are drawn and drawn again in her signature urgency; impatient to see their pleasing forms and arrangements take shape.
